This page is part of our Terms of Service. It explains what happens if you change your mind, a plan changes or a gift needs to come back. Your proposal states the return position and any cancellation schedule in full before approval, subject to section 1.3 of the Terms. Change-of-mind deductions below do not apply to refunds required for our breach, delayed shipment, a valid Guarantee claim or another right that applicable law does not allow us to restrict. "Final sale" does not remove those rights.
At a glance
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| Request deposit ($250), if you go ahead | Credited in full against the price of your favor. |
| Request deposit, if we have nothing to propose | Refunded in full. |
| Request deposit, if you withdraw before a proposal is presented | Refunded in full. |
| Request deposit, once we have presented a proposal and you do not go ahead | Earned for a proposal that reasonably responds to the brief and budget, subject to service-failure and legal refund rights. |
| Before the favor becomes binding under Terms section 6.2 | Cancel with nothing more to pay, apart from the request deposit terms. Binding auction authorizations and written corporate credit terms are exceptions. |
| After you pay, before we buy, book or begin anything | For a change of mind, refund of the amount paid less the earned request-service charge and disclosed, reasonable and unrecoverable third-party costs; no duplicate deduction. |
| After we buy something non-refundable, book an experience or begin a commission | The disclosed cancellation schedule applies, with credit for avoided costs, refunds and resale proceeds; no duplicate deductions or automatic forfeiture. |
| After delivery: personalized, commissioned, perishable and experience favors | Generally final sale for a change of mind, subject to the Guarantee and legal rights. |
| After delivery: stock objects | The return terms stated in their proposal. |
| Something arrives damaged, faulty or wrong | Covered by the guarantee. |
| We cancel, or the piece you approved is no longer available | Full refund of everything you paid, or an alternative if you prefer. |
1. The request deposit, and before you pay
The request deposit. Each request begins with a $250 payment for research and preparation of a proposal, called the request deposit. The deposit terms and the Terms of Service are presented and accepted before payment. The amount is credited in full against the price of the favor if you proceed (Terms section 4.1).
- If you go ahead with a favor from the proposal, the full deposit is credited against its price, and your invoice shows the balance.
- If we have nothing to propose, or we decline your request before presenting a proposal, we refund the deposit in full.
- If you withdraw before a proposal is presented, we refund the deposit in full.
- Once we deliver a proposal that reasonably responds to your stated brief and budget, the deposit is earned for the curation work. It is not refundable merely because you decline the proposal or let it expire, but remains subject to refund for our failure to perform the agreed service or where the law requires.
- If we withdraw after presenting a proposal, we refund the deposit in full.
- We may waive the deposit at our discretion, for example for established corporate clients.
A refunded deposit goes back to the original payment method, under section 11.
Before the favor becomes binding. Unless an auction authorization or written corporate agreement provides otherwise, you may withdraw before the agreement is made under Terms section 6.2, and we void the invoice. Nothing more is owed; the request deposit follows section 1 above.
2. After you pay, before anything is bought, booked or begun
If you cancel solely for a change of mind after paying but before we buy, book or begin, we refund the amount paid less the earned request-service charge in section 1 and reasonable, documented third-party costs disclosed before approval and actually incurred for your favor. These costs may include:
- an actual payment-processing or transfer cost that the provider does not return, only if the proposal clearly disclosed that deduction and applicable law and payment-network rules permit it; and
- an authorized out-of-pocket cost, such as an unrecoverable dealer holding fee or courier booking.
We list each deduction in writing, make reasonable efforts to avoid or recover the cost, and do not count any charge twice. The credited request deposit is part of the amount paid and any earned request-service charge is retained only once. We do not charge further for our own time unless a specific earned service charge was agreed in the proposal before work began. No request-service or other fee is deducted from a full refund due because we cancel, breach the agreement or must refund under law.
3. After we have bought, booked or begun
If you cancel solely for a change of mind after we have made an authorized non-refundable purchase, booked an experience or begun a commission, the disclosed cancellation schedule applies. We will:
- make reasonable efforts to return the piece, resell it, cancel the booking or recover money from the maker or operator; and
- refund the amount you paid above the lawful cancellation charge, including all avoided costs and sums recovered, and provide an itemized accounting.
We may retain only reasonable, documented and unavoidable costs or earned charges expressly agreed before work began, including the request service only once, after crediting supplier refunds, usable materials, resale proceeds and costs saved. We do not retain an unearned balance merely because a supplier does not refund us. No cost may be counted twice, and a cancellation charge cannot exceed the agreed price or amount lawfully recoverable. This section does not limit refunds due for our breach, delayed shipment or another mandatory right.
Auctions. A piece won at auction has been bought, so once the bid is won this section applies to it.
Commissions and travel use the schedule supplied before approval. Each stage identifies the work and non-refundable commitments authorized at that stage; it is not an automatic forfeiture of the price. For commissions, the calculation is:
| Stage reached when you cancel | Refund |
|---|---|
| Paid, design not yet approved | Amount paid less the earned request-service charge and other permitted documented costs, each counted once |
| Design approved | Amount paid less permitted earned request and design charges and other documented costs, each counted once |
| Materials bought | Amount paid less permitted earned charges and unrecoverable costs, with credit for reusable or resalable materials and no duplicate deduction |
| Making begun | Amount paid less permitted earned work and unavoidable commitments, with credit for costs saved and amounts recovered |
| Finished | The permitted charge may reach the agreed price for an unusable or unsalable custom piece, but only after required mitigation and credits; no automatic forfeiture |
For a commission paid in installments, the refund cannot exceed what you paid. If the lawful cancellation charge exceeds payments received, an additional balance is due only to the extent the proposal expressly disclosed that exposure before approval and the law permits it. We provide the calculation, credit all payments once, and do not automatically accelerate the second installment. Any later recovery produces a corresponding refund.
For travel and experiences, the operator's own cancellation schedule applies, and the proposal shows it.
4. Final sale
These favors are generally final sale for a change of mind once made, engraved, booked or delivered, subject to the proposal, the Guarantee and rights the law gives you:
- personalized pieces: engraved, monogrammed, altered or sized for the recipient;
- commissioned pieces: anything made to order;
- perishables: food, flowers, plants and anything that spoils; and
- experiences: dinners, visits, tickets, stays and travel.
Engraving text, designs and details you approve in writing are final.
Where EU or UK consumer cancellation rights apply, the required precontract information, cancellation instructions and model form will be supplied before you are bound. A non-exempt distance service generally has a 14-day cancellation period from contract formation; for non-exempt goods the period generally runs from receipt. A personalized-goods, perishable-goods or date-specific leisure exception applies only when its legal conditions are met. Merely sourcing an existing object for you does not make it personalized. We begin a service during a cancellation period only on the express request and acknowledgments the law requires. Any charge for work performed, loss of the cancellation right after full service performance, return cost or reimbursement follows those rules, which take priority over a conflicting final-sale or deposit term.
5. Stock objects
Some objects can be returned and some cannot, because we buy from many makers, dealers and houses. Your proposal states the position for each piece, for example "Returnable for 14 days after delivery, unused, in its original packaging" or "Final sale".
Where a return is allowed:
- tell your curator by the date in the proposal;
- the piece must be unused, undamaged and complete, with any packaging, papers and certificates that came with it;
- we arrange its insured collection, discreetly; and
- we refund once the piece is back and reasonably inspected, within the timing in section 11; any charge for return collection must have been disclosed before approval and must be lawful.
6. Recipients
A recipient who would like to return or exchange a returnable gift should contact curator@properfavor.com. We protect the purchaser's price information except where disclosure is necessary to honor the recipient's legal rights.
Recipients may receive an exchange or a credit with Proper Favor. Purchase refunds normally go to the original payer; any legally required cash redemption or other consumer right remains available.
7. Wine and spirits
Alcohol in a favor is sold and billed by a licensed partner and fulfilled through its authorized arrangements. The partner's disclosed return and refund terms apply, subject to applicable law. We help with any problem on your behalf.
8. Experiences
Experiences are arranged with an operator, whose terms the proposal includes.
- If the operator cancels, we seek and pass on all refunds due and return any part of your payment we still hold for services that will not be provided. An agreed fee may be retained only to the extent it was clearly disclosed, actually earned and lawful. This does not limit our responsibility for our own error or a refund the law requires us to provide.
- If the operator postpones, we explain the rescheduling and cancellation options in its disclosed terms and under applicable law; a new date is not treated as accepted where your consent is required.
- Weather and safety decisions belong to the operator.
- For larger trips, we recommend travel insurance.
9. If we cancel, or a piece is no longer available
If we cannot go ahead, for example because an approved piece is unavailable or we decide to withdraw for a legal, safety or fraud concern, we refund everything you paid to us for the canceled favor, including its credited deposit, without a processing-fee deduction. If a piece is unavailable, you may choose an approved alternative instead. No substitution is made without your written approval except as narrowly provided in Terms section 9.3. A legal requirement to block or retain funds takes priority over a refund promise.
10. Delays
Terms sections 11.3 and 11.4 govern delays. If we cannot meet the promised shipment date for merchandise, we provide the required delay notice and obtain required consent, or cancel and issue a full, prompt refund of the unshipped merchandise. Custom work, installment payments, a target label and irrecoverable supplier costs do not remove that right. Experience delays follow the disclosed operator terms subject to mandatory law and our own arranging obligations.
11. How refunds are paid
- Refunds normally go to the original payer by the original payment method, subject to applicable law.
- We issue a refund within 5 business days after the right to that refund arises, the return arrives or a later recovery becomes refundable, as applicable. We never wait for a supplier or insurer to reimburse us where your refund is already due under these Terms or the law, and we follow any shorter legal deadline.
- Card refunds usually appear within 5 to 10 business days, depending on your bank. Bank refunds go to the account that paid.
- We do not refund in store credit unless you ask for it.
12. How to reach us
