InstrumentThe Investor

A satellite-messaging watch for an investor

The ask

Our lead investor wired the second round on Monday, then told us she is spending a week walking alone in the High Sierra, well out of phone range. Her husband wants to hear from her. We'd like her to go with something that lets her check in from the trail. Under $2,500, all in.

The gift

A current-generation titanium GPS multisport watch with a sapphire lens, preloaded topographic maps, and satellite and cellular messaging built in, so it can send a text or an SOS without a phone, given a clear view of the sky and an active service plan. We set up that plan with her and cover its first year, and send the watch charged, in the linen box with a wax-sealed card.

Why it's extraordinary

The watch carries its own satellite link, with coverage across the continental United States, so from an open camp with a clear view of the sky she can send her husband a short check-in each evening without packing a separate messenger.

The moment

On clear evenings of the walk, a short message goes home from a camp above the tree line, sent from her wrist.

A curator replies within one business day.
