An antique wardrobe trunk for an investor

The ask

Our first investor wrote her check when we were still cutting dresses on a kitchen table. She comes to every fitting she can, and packs for a weekend as if it might last a month. We open our first store this winter. Something old, made for clothes, with a past. Around $30k.

The gift

A wardrobe trunk made by a Paris trunk-maker about a century ago, in canvas over wood with brass rivets, a brass lock, and leather handles. It stands on end and opens like a book, with its original wooden hangers on one side and six drawers on the other. A trunk restorer conserves it, and we have her initials painted on the side, as owners did then. It arrives with its key and a wax-sealed card.

Why it's extraordinary

A wardrobe trunk was built so clothes could travel on hangers, as they hang at home, through weeks at sea or on the road. She packs as if every weekend might last a month, and this was made for exactly that.

The moment

It stands open in her dressing room, hung with dresses from the new store, the way trunks like it once stood in cabins at sea.
