A Barrel in Their Name
A barrel of Burgundy for a lead investor
The ask
Our lead investor backed us in 2019 when nobody else would. He is a serious Burgundy drinker and goes to Beaune most autumns. We've just returned his fund three times over. I'd like a gift he can share with his whole firm for years. Budget is open.
The gift
A full barrel of grand cru red from the charity wine auction held in Beaune each November since 1859, bid for on his firm's behalf. A Burgundy négociant raises the wine in barrel for twelve to eighteen months and bottles it, about 288 bottles. We request the optional line with the firm's name on the label, which the auction approves before printing. The bidding record arrives first, in the linen box with a wax-sealed card.
Why it's extraordinary
He gets a Burgundy he can pour for the whole firm for a decade, bought in the firm's name, and the hammer price goes to the town's hospital charity.
The moment
The first case is opened at the year-end dinner, and a label is passed around the table.
