Two Blades, Side by Side
A knife-forging class for an anniversary
The ask
Two of our closest friends were married in Hampshire a year ago this month. They cook together every night and argue about knives every time. I'd like to give them something they make themselves that ends up in their kitchen. Around $1,500.
The gift
Two days at a bladesmith's workshop in Southampton, one place each, in a class of two. On the first day they heat, forge and shape their blades at the anvil and harden the steel; on the second they fit the handles and sharpen. Each leaves with a forged kitchen knife of their own, and the booking arrives in the linen box with a wax-sealed card.
Why it's extraordinary
They will cook every meal of the years ahead with knives they forged side by side, in the week of their first anniversary.
The moment
The two knives hang side by side in their kitchen and are used every night.
