Seven Decades in Margaux
A Margaux tasting for a golden anniversary
The ask
My parents married in 1977 and have spent most anniversaries somewhere with vines. Their fiftieth is next May. My brother and I want to send them to Bordeaux for a day they couldn't arrange themselves. Flights are covered. For the day itself, about $5k.
The gift
A private day at a second-growth estate in Margaux, classified in 1855. The owner leads a seated vertical tasting of seven of the estate's vintages, spanning seven decades, in a tasting room kept for the two of them. A long lunch at the château follows, with wines from three Médoc estates side by side. A driver collects them from their Bordeaux hotel. The itinerary arrives in the linen box with a wax-sealed card.
Why it's extraordinary
The seven vintages run across seven decades, so their fifty years of marriage fit inside one flight from a single vineyard, poured by the person who runs it now.
The moment
The flight is poured in one sitting, and the lunch afterward runs well into the afternoon.
