CraftThe New Arrival

A hand-carved rocking horse for a grandchild

The ask

My first grandchild was born in Kent last week. I want to give her something that will still be in the family when she has children of her own. Wooden, made by hand, not a toy from a shop. Up to $9k.

The gift

A full-size rocking horse carved by hand from British hardwood in a Kent workshop, painted dapple gray, with a real horsehair mane and tail and a fixed leather saddle. We have a small brass plate engraved with her name and birth date and fitted to the stand, where it will stay through every rider after her. It is delivered in person, with a wax-sealed card in the linen box.

Why it's extraordinary

Carved rocking horses are made to outlast the child who first rides them. This one is ridden by her, and later by whoever comes next, with her name on the stand.

The moment

It stands in the nursery long before she can ride it, waiting.
