The Moon Jar

CraftThe Board

A porcelain moon jar for a retiring chair

The ask

Our chair steps down at the November board meeting after eleven years. The directors want one gift from all of us. She spent her twenties in Seoul and talks often about the white porcelain in the museums there. Something for her home, not her office. Around $6k.

The gift

A white porcelain moon jar, about 36 cm high, thrown on the wheel and reduction-fired by a Korean-born potter working in England, who trained in Seoul before moving to the UK in 2018. The form descends from the Joseon-dynasty jars of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. We add a short written note on the tradition and the maker, and it arrives in a fitted crate, with a wax-sealed card in the linen box.

Why it's extraordinary

She has seen the old jars behind museum glass in Seoul. This one comes from a potter trained in the same city, carrying the same form into a house where it can be touched.

The moment

It stands empty on a low chest in her hall and catches the evening light from the window.

A curator replies within one business day.
