The Furnace at Murano
A Murano glassblowing morning for newlyweds
The ask
My college roommate is getting married in April, and they are spending the first week in Venice. They have every towel they need. I'd like to give them a morning at a glass furnace, making something together. Under $2,500, and it has to work around their dates.
The gift
A private morning at a working glass furnace on Murano, reached by private boat from Venice. A master glassmaker demonstrates at the furnace, then guides each of them as they gather, blow, and shape a piece of their own. New glass cools overnight, so we book a furnace that ships finished pieces, and both follow them home. The card is waiting at the hotel, wax-sealed in the linen box.
Why it's extraordinary
Glass has been made on Murano since the city moved its furnaces there in 1291. Among the first things they make as a married couple is a piece from that same island.
The moment
Two slightly uneven pieces of glass arrive a few weeks after the honeymoon and go on the kitchen shelf.
