A vintage film camera for a new photographer

The ask

Writing for our creative director. We've hired a staff photographer who came up through newspapers and shoots film on weekends. She starts in two weeks. We want something that shows we know what she cares about. Under $5k.

The gift

A German 35 mm rangefinder from around 1960 with a 50 mm f/2 lens, cleaned, lubricated, and adjusted by a camera restorer, with a six-month warranty on the work. With it come ten rolls of black-and-white film and a one-to-one session with a darkroom printer in split-grade printing, toning, and fiber paper, from her own negatives. Camera, film and the date of the session share the linen box.

Why it's extraordinary

A mechanical rangefinder of this age needs no battery and, serviced, can run for decades more. The session ends with her own frames printed on fiber paper and toned, a print no screen can make.

The moment

The first roll goes through the camera that weekend, and the best frame is printed by her own hand.

A curator replies within one business day.
