Six Minutes Over Luxor
The 2027 Luxor eclipse for an anniversary
The ask
My husband is an amateur astronomer and has wanted to stand under a total eclipse since he was a boy. Our twenty-fifth anniversary is in July 2027, and I've read there's a long one over Egypt that August. Two of us, everything arranged. Around $25k.
The gift
Two places aboard a Nile riverboat moored at Luxor for six nights around the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027, when totality there lasts about six minutes and twenty seconds. An archaeoastronomer lectures on ancient Egyptian sky-watching, and the touring program takes in Luxor Temple, Karnak, and the Valleys of the Kings and Queens. Two pairs of eclipse glasses come in the linen box, with the booking under a wax seal.
Why it's extraordinary
He has wanted this since childhood. Totality at Luxor runs over six minutes, longer than most total eclipses allow, beside temples built by people who also watched the sky.
The moment
The glasses come off for totality, and the anniversary is dated by the eclipse ever after.
