Born the Same Year

TimeThe Long Client

A 1971 dive watch for a long-standing client

The ask

Our longest client turns fifty-six in March. He has dived every winter since his twenties and talks about his first wreck to anyone who asks. We've worked together since 2006. Something from 1971, the year he was born, that he would actually wear. Around $15k. It needs to reach Boston by the 14th.

The gift

A steel dive watch made in 1971, with its original matte black dial and the rotating bezel of the period. An independent watchmaker services the movement and keeps every original part, and a written report records the serial, the dial and anything replaced. A fitted travel case holds it, inside the linen box, under a card sealed in wax.

Why it's extraordinary

It is exactly as old as he is, and it was built for the water he has gone back to every winter for thirty years.

The moment

It goes on the wrist before the next dive trip, and the condition report stays in the logbook.

A curator replies within one business day.
