Ten Years in Oak

CellarThe Long Client

A Scotch cask laid down for a family client

The ask

A client of ours, a family business, has worked with us for fifteen years. The founder's grandson takes over in the spring. They are whisky people. I'd like something the family can open together when he has been in charge for ten years. $5k or so.

The gift

A cask of new-make spirit filled at a working Scottish distillery, held under bond in a Scottish warehouse and registered in the family's name. It becomes Scotch whisky after three years in oak and matures for ten or longer before they decide to bottle it. The delivery order and a record of the fill are what the linen box holds.

Why it's extraordinary

It marks the handover with something that will not be ready until the new generation has found its feet, and only the family decides when to open it.

The moment

The delivery order is framed in the office, and the date the cask turns ten goes into the calendar.

A curator replies within one business day.
