A first fine watch for a chef turned manager

The ask

Our club's board has named our head chef general manager. She has cooked here longer than anyone on staff, and kitchen rules kept a watch off her wrist. She timed everything by the clock above the pass. Next month she moves out front. We'd like to give her a good watch, around $3,000.

The gift

A NOMOS Glashütte Club Campus Night Sky (ref. 719), with a dark blue dial and luminous numerals in a 36mm steel case under domed sapphire. Its hand-wound DUW 4001 is made in Glashütte around the maker's own escapement, the swing system, a part many makers source from one Swiss supplier. The same movement runs the costlier Tangente, yet this case is water-resistant to 100 meters. It arrives wound and set.

Why it's extraordinary

Food codes keep jewelry off the hands and arms of cooks while they prepare food, and kitchens read that to include watches. Through her years at the stove, her wrist was bare. Out front, a watch can stay on.

The moment

She wears it to her first board meeting as general manager, seated at the table she spent years cooking for.
