The Smallest Town
A Swiss Alpine chef's table for a CEO
The ask
Our CEO reaches ten years in the role this fall. The nine of us on the board have sat through every one of her budget reviews. We'd like to take her to one dinner abroad, somewhere she wouldn't book for herself, and a night to sleep it off. Around $20,000. We'll handle flights.
The gift
Dinner for ten at the chef's table of a three-star castle restaurant in Fürstenau, a village in the Swiss Alps that calls itself the smallest town in the world. The long table sits in a living room in view of the kitchen, with a drink poured for each course. Every guest sleeps in the castle. We send cars from Zurich, and the plan arrives in the linen box with a wax-sealed card.
Why it's extraordinary
For ten years she has run meetings in rooms built for a hundred. For one night the ten of them sit at a single table in a castle with twelve guest rooms, and nobody drives home.
The moment
The last course reaches the long table near midnight, and nobody has a train or a meeting to catch in the morning.
